It may have been one of SDL’s smaller projects, but for travellers from the south Wales station of Ystrad Mynach, north of Caerphilly, the installation of a new ticket office and waiting room made a big difference. Liaising closely with train operator Arriva Trains Wales, SDL was charged with transforming the interior of an existing brick building, creating a modern ticket office and comfortable, fully enclosed waiting room.

Working within the confines of a site alongside a live train line and busy platform, the SDL team transformed the block with a new, bespoke ticket office desk and security screen, complete with all IT connections required for modern ticketing. The waiting area and disabled toilet have been fitted out with the robust fixtures and fittings required of a location that has, in the past, been subject to vandalism.

The transformation was part of the £24 million Wales Station Improvement Scheme that has seen many of the region’s stations upgraded with better waiting facilities, and step-free access to platforms.
